CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Sam Flynn
SERIES: TRON
CANON POINT: Right after the second childhood scene when Sam's riding his bike. (This means he'll come in with his P.K. Ripper... which he can't ride lmfao.)
LOSS: The ability to ride a bike. As someone who is far too young to drive any kind of vehicle, Sam's only really ability to escape or run away while he's upset is being able to ride a bike. Without this ability, he'll likely have to really start facing the fact that his father's disappeared and talk about how he feels, rather than simply running off.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
For a kid, Sam's relatively introvertive and just plain quiet, especially since his father's disappearance. Instead of being out and playing with other kids, Sam's more the type to stay indoors and at home, just in case his father might somehow come back. As it is, a habit like this starts to really ingrain a more introvertive nature into someone. As we see with Sam's older self, he lives on the outskirts of town and in a renovated shop along the river, almost guaranteeing no visitors and doesn't pick up his phone. It's easy to imply, then, that this desire to be away from many people likely started with the media circus surrounding Flynn's disappearance. Strangers are very likely to get a nervous stare and possibly a kick to the shins if they get too close; he's used to being protected and kept away from people he doesn't know, so he's not naturally accustomed to being around them.
One major difference between Sam's adult self and younger version is on the matter of hope. At this point, Sam hasn't quite lost hope that his dad will just walk through the door again. All leads haven't been exhausted and, as such, he sees Alan Bradley as a temp, filing in just until his dad gets back. Despite the presence of Flynn's friends and their help, none of them are his dad, even if he won't say it outright to them. He misses his dad terribly, but again won't talk to anyone about it, period. Someone would need to outright ask him about Flynn to get him to really speak on the subject much and even then, after his negative experience with reporters hounding him with these kinds of questions, he's pretty burnt out on the whole sharing his feelings thing. So, he'll quietly let things stew while he thinks and considers.
That being said, Sam is ridiculously naive and gullible, even more so than a typical kid should be. As evidenced in his adult self, unless they have BAD GUY painted all over their face, Sam's likely to believe whatever they say right off the bat, with the exception of a few extreme things. Sam's absolutely the type to eat something off the floor if someone dared him to, or even mentioned that some other kid was too scared to do it. That being said, Sam isn't inherently stupid; he's relatively bright and is very book-smart when he applies himself. At this point in his life, he's not apathetic and indifferent yet, so he likely shows a great deal of enthusiasm for learning, especially about super cool things like programming. The whole world is open for being studied and explored in his own Sam way, which isn't necessarily the typical. He likes to do things his own way, but he doesn't complain except to people he knows and knows well; that attitude of "fuck da police" hasn't quite developed yet.
However, Sam is very much a hands-on kid. He likes to touch and do things, not be told, which can and does get him into trouble as an adult. While someone else might sit back, Sam's the one to jump up and do it himself, which does contrast with his naturally more introvertive nature. He definitely needs his alone time, but those times when he's around people he trusts or other kids, he's not afraid to show just what kind of cool shit he's made of. Unfortunately, sometimes this 'cool shit' is jumping off something high or doing something very risky, but on occasion, Sam can and does show that he's pretty clever in a more conventional way that doesn't danger him in any way. It's just the whole jumping off of things is far more exciting than being clever.
Still, Sam is still a kid; there are still things that will scare him other than reporters hounding him for answers. He might beg to see a scary movie, even if he shouldn't be seeing that kind of stuff for another three years. If someone tells him that there's a spaghetti monster who lives in the toilet and tries to eat kids who don't finish their dinner, he'll believe them, which also goes hand-in-hand with his naivety and gullibility. If Sam believes it's real or is convinced it's real, then he'll believe it pretty much until he has some extremely strong evidence to the contrary. If Sam learns that he can wish things up and pretty much build almost anything that he can think of, he'll be pretty hard to move from his room.
ABILITIES: Sam isn't really all that extraordinary. He's very bright and picks up on things quickly, remembers conversations easily, but altogether is a perfectly human and normal kid on the most part. So, supernatural skills and abilities aren't really applicable.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
Sam sat quietly in his bed, fingers clasp tight on the blankets covering him. The room was far too dark for the kid's liking, too unfamiliar to be considered even slightly homely. He wanted to be home, he wanted to be home so bad; he'd even started missing his grandparents at times like this. At this point in the evening, they'd likely be watching the Cosby Show and even though Sam rarely wanted to join them, he could hear those familiar sounds and that laugh track in his room, echoing just enough to be comfortable. However, this place had none of those, no audience laughing along at another joke Sam didn't understand.
So, here he sat, wide awake, but unable to move from his place in his bed. From his position, he could see those dark corners, wonder what might be hiding in them. Silently and carefully, he reached over to his bedside table for the light-up Tron figure sitting there. With one small click, Sam felt confidence surge through him. Nothing could get him while Tron was here to defend him, no doubt about that. Tron would always fight for the users and boy did Sam need someone to fight for him right now against that darkness of his room.
With that new courage, Sam leapt suddenly out from under the covers, jumping out onto the floor and holding out his Tron figure to light the way as he darted to the door. Alan's room wasn't far.
Alan knew how to fight those monsters that lived in the closet, right?
Sam could help, there wasn't any question about that, but he just needed a little bit of help from someone taller and stronger than him. Just this once.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[The journal opens and at first there's just some silence before Sam finally starts to talk. When he does, though, he sounds nervous if not a little unenthusiastic.] Alan said I should get to know more kids around the Castle.
[Pausing for a couple moments.] I like playing games; my dad made a few himself. [And yet another pause.] We could play on teams and have a tournament like a contest. Whoever wins could get something really cool like a pizza party.
Or we could go into town and find something to do. [Without adult permission whoops!]
INTENT: Sam, as an adult, is a big ol' bundle of issues. He sulks, he broods, he's reckless, throws himself off of buildings and all that jazz. However, he's incredibly bright and very intelligent before that apathy sets in. So, as a player, I'd like to dig into how those habits formed and the whys of exactly who he is. As well, having someone to talk to a complete different set of people from Carolina would be incredibly nice.
